Expo and React Native with Expo MCP

Expo rules for agents plus Expo's official MCP server: npx expo install, Expo Router, no secrets in EXPO_PUBLIC_, no production EAS releases, check on a simulator.

Verified install Not agent-tested v1.0.0 MIT updated react-nativeexpotypescriptiosandroid
Equips
  • 1 1 Rules
  • 1 1 Skills
  • 1 1 MCP

Expo now ships its own agent tooling: new projects include an AGENTS.md, Claude Code and Codex have an official Expo plugin, and the hosted Expo MCP server (free plan included) gives agents current docs, EAS build logs and simulator screenshots. This loadout adds the project rules agents still get wrong: SDK-matched installs with npx expo install, never editing generated native folders, EXPO_PUBLIC_ variables treated as public, development builds for native packages, and no production builds, submits or updates unless asked.

What's in it

  • Expo MCP server (remote, OAuth) for docs, EAS logs and screenshots
  • npx expo install and expo-doctor after every dependency change
  • Generated ios/ and android/ folders left alone under CNG
  • EXPO_PUBLIC_ variables treated as public; no secrets in the app
  • No production eas build, submit or update without being asked

You'll need

  • Tools: node
  • MCP servers: expo

Clean: no credentials, risky shell or hidden text
  • Scanner intake-precheck/1: verdict clean; network yes (listing says yes)
  • info mcp-server in mcp.json: expo: url https://mcp.expo.dev/mcp
ReferencesLinks and file paths between the loadout's files resolve, including for each agent's installed layout. Pass 2 references between files resolve for every agent
Size limitsFile count and sizes are within the submission limits; SKILL.md bodies stay under 500 lines. Pass
5 files, 4.2 KB total; largest AGENTS.md 2.0 KB
  • Limits: 30 files, 32 KB per file, 128 KB total, 500 lines per skill or rule
LicenceA recognised SPDX licence, with the licence text available. Pass MIT, by Agent Loadout; text in the repository LICENSE
Starter buildA minimal fixture project with the loadout applied installs and builds or type-checks, and the loadout's own code examples compile. Not applicable
Not applicable: checking an Expo change needs a simulator or device and an Expo account for the MCP server, neither of which runs free in CI
  • The loadout is project rules, one procedure skill and Expo's hosted MCP server; there is no starter project or code example to compile.
  • The MCP config is still checked structurally and its URL is checked for reachability.
  • Every other Level 1 check still runs on this loadout.

What this means: a script checked the files themselves: they parse, they install where each agent looks, any MCP config is sound, the safety scan is clean, references between files resolve, and, where a free and repeatable fixture exists, a small starter project builds with the loadout applied. No AI agent was run. Per-agent results ("tested with agent") are separate and stay untested until an agent actually runs.

# AGENTS.md: Expo / React Native app

React Native app on Expo with Expo Router and TypeScript. Check the Expo SDK version in `package.json` before using an API.

## Commands
- Start: `npx expo start`. Lint: `npx expo lint`. Types: `npx tsc --noEmit`. Tests: the project's test script.
- Health check after dependency changes: `npx expo-doctor`.
- Add a package: `npx expo install <package>` so the version matches the SDK. Never plain `npm install` for native packages.
- Done means: lint, type-check and tests pass, and expo-doctor reports no problems you introduced.

## Project rules
- Routes are files in `app/` (Expo Router). Layouts in `_layout.tsx`; do not hand-roll a navigator alongside the router.
- Native config lives in `app.json` or `app.config.ts` and config plugins. If `ios/` and `android/` are generated
(Continuous Native Generation, listed in `.gitignore`), never edit them; change config and run `npx expo prebuild --clean`.
- Packages with native code need a development build, not Expo Go. Say so when you add one.
- `EXPO_PUBLIC_` variables are compiled into the app and visible to anyone. Never put secrets in them; secrets stay on a server.
- Use platform-specific files (`.ios.tsx`, `.android.tsx`) or `Platform.select` only when behaviour really differs.
- Lists use `FlatList` or `FlashList`, never `map` inside a `ScrollView` for long data.

## Releases
- Never run `eas build --profile production`, `eas submit` or `eas update` on a production channel without the human
asking for it in this session. Preview builds and updates to a preview channel are fine when asked.
- Bumping the Expo SDK is its own task: follow the upgrade guide, run `npx expo install --fix`, then expo-doctor.

## Expo MCP and skills
- The Expo MCP server (`expo` in the MCP config) gives live docs, EAS build logs and, with a running dev server,
simulator screenshots. Prefer it over guessing APIs from memory. It signs in with your Expo account (OAuth).
- Use the `expo-change` skill for any feature or fix.

## Claude Code notes
- Skills from this loadout live in `.claude/skills/`: `expo-change`. Use them when their description matches the task.
- MCP servers for this project are in `.mcp.json`. If a server is not connected, tell the human rather than working around it.
- Follow AGENTS.md above; where this file and AGENTS.md disagree, AGENTS.md wins.

# Expo change

1. Read `package.json` (Expo SDK), `app.json` or `app.config.ts`, and the routes in `app/` that the change touches.
2. Look up the API in the current docs (Expo MCP `search_documentation` / `read_documentation`, or docs.expo.dev) for
this SDK version. Do not rely on memory for package APIs; they change between SDKs.
3. New packages: `npx expo install <package>`. If it has native code, note that a development build is needed.
4. Make the change in TypeScript, following the router layout. Keep secrets out of `EXPO_PUBLIC_` variables.
5. Run `npx expo lint`, `npx tsc --noEmit`, the tests and, after dependency changes, `npx expo-doctor`.
6. Check it runs: with the dev server up, open the screen on a simulator or device. With Expo MCP local capabilities,
take a screenshot and look at it; otherwise ask the human to check and describe what to look for.
7. Report: files changed, packages added (and whether a new dev build is needed), check results, screenshot if taken.

Installing and testing

How do I install Expo and React Native with Expo MCP in Claude Code?

From your project root, put AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, skills/expo-change/SKILL.md at .claude/skills/expo-change/SKILL.md, mcp.json at .mcp.json. The "Claude Code" tab on this page has the curl commands, or download https://loadout.jnw-it.com/download/expo-react-native/claude-code.zip, which is already laid out. Do not overwrite an existing AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md; merge it.

How do I install Expo and React Native with Expo MCP in Codex CLI?

From your project root, put AGENTS.md, skills/expo-change/SKILL.md at .agents/skills/expo-change/SKILL.md. The "Codex CLI" tab on this page has the curl commands, or download https://loadout.jnw-it.com/download/expo-react-native/codex.zip, which is already laid out. mcp.json needs a manual step: Codex reads MCP servers from ~/.codex/config.toml (TOML, not JSON). Add each server with `codex mcp add` or copy the URL into an [mcp_servers.<name>] table. Do not overwrite an existing AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md; merge it.

How do I install Expo and React Native with Expo MCP in Cursor?

From your project root, put AGENTS.md, skills/expo-change/SKILL.md at .agents/skills/expo-change/SKILL.md, mcp.json at .cursor/mcp.json. The "Cursor" tab on this page has the curl commands, or download https://loadout.jnw-it.com/download/expo-react-native/cursor.zip, which is already laid out. Do not overwrite an existing AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md; merge it.

How do I install Expo and React Native with Expo MCP in Gemini CLI?

From your project root, put AGENTS.md, GEMINI.md, skills/expo-change/SKILL.md at .agents/skills/expo-change/SKILL.md. The "Gemini CLI" tab on this page has the curl commands, or download https://loadout.jnw-it.com/download/expo-react-native/gemini-cli.zip, which is already laid out. mcp.json needs a manual step: Gemini CLI reads MCP servers from the mcpServers block of .gemini/settings.json. Merge the servers in by hand, and use httpUrl instead of url for HTTP servers. Since 18 June 2026 Gemini CLI serves only Gemini Code Assist Standard/Enterprise licences and paid API keys; personal accounts use Antigravity CLI. Do not overwrite an existing AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md; merge it.

How do I install Expo and React Native with Expo MCP in Antigravity CLI?

From your project root, put AGENTS.md, skills/expo-change/SKILL.md at .agents/skills/expo-change/SKILL.md, mcp.json at .agents/mcp_config.json. The "Antigravity CLI" tab on this page has the curl commands, or download https://loadout.jnw-it.com/download/expo-react-native/antigravity-cli.zip, which is already laid out. Do not overwrite an existing AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md; merge it.

How do I install Expo and React Native with Expo MCP in GitHub Copilot?

From your project root, put AGENTS.md, skills/expo-change/SKILL.md at .agents/skills/expo-change/SKILL.md. The "GitHub Copilot" tab on this page has the curl commands, or download https://loadout.jnw-it.com/download/expo-react-native/copilot.zip, which is already laid out. mcp.json needs a manual step: In VS Code, MCP servers go in .vscode/mcp.json under a "servers" key (not "mcpServers"). Copilot CLI uses ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json. Do not overwrite an existing AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md; merge it.

Has Expo and React Native with Expo MCP been tested?

It passed the Level 1 automated install checks on 2026-10-17: the files parse, install to each agent's documented paths, and pass the safety scan. No AI agent has run it yet, so no agent pass or fail is claimed.

More for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Antigravity CLI and GitHub Copilot.
